Bar Exam Tutoring
Bar exam studying is different from law school studying. There are only 2 grades: pass and fail. Therefore, you don't need to be perfect. You just need to pass. And if you prepare correctly, you'll never have to do it again.
Modernwriter.com’s courses are developed and presented by Laurene Sorensen, an attorney and exam skills specialist. Ms. Sorensen has passed the bar in 7 states (ID, WA, RI, NY, MA, VT, and CT). In addition, she has graded bar exams and written, edited, and evaluated exams and preparation tools in numerous disciplines. She offers a variety of courses as well as customized tutorials. All courses are adaptable for use in group and individual settings, and in live and distance-learning formats. Please contact us at mail.modernwriter.com or call 401-965-6724 to learn more.
Personalized Tutoring
Whether you are a 3L getting ready for your first bar exam, a practicing attorney who is seeking admission in a new jurisdiction, or a candidate who needs to retake part or all of the bar exam, you can benefit from one-on-one tutoring. We will assess your bar exam strengths and weaknesses, factor in any personal constraints—such as restrictions on study time or having English as a second language--and put together a program that gives you the knowledge, confidence and exam skills you need to pass.
Bar Review Course Supplementation
We welcome students who are planning to use a traditional bar review course. Our current course offerings and personalized tutorials are designed to enhance—not replace—a full-scale bar review course by providing customized, targeted training in how to read and write excellent bar exam answers.
One-on-One Mentoring
Traditional bar review courses operate in two settings: large-group lectures and self-paced home study plans. Even if you are fortunate enough to be able to attend live lectures, your access to the lecturers may be limited or nonexistent. If you are studying on your own using a “home study” course, you are even more isolated, and it can be hard to get motivated to study. We offer one-on-one mentoring and feedback to offset the isolation frequently experienced by bar candidates.
Early Start Program
Designed for current law students and foreign attorneys who are planning to take an American bar exam, this course bridges the gap between law school study skills and bar exam excellence. You'll learn what subjects will be on your state bar; what type of questions to anticipate; creating a realistic study plan; choosing a bar review course; using courseware effectively; and how to survive and thrive in the exam room.
Essay Skills Intensive
Essay questions are a key component of every state’s bar exam. Even in states that use the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), essays can count for up to 2/3 of your total grade. In some states—Washington is one—the entire exam consists of essay questions. It’s a mental, emotional and physical workout and the normal rules of academic writing don't always suffice. You need to know how to read, analyze, and answer an essay question so that the grader can easily say “This person knows their material” and give you the points you need to pass. This course will give you concentrated practice and feedback, using actual past questions from your state’s bar exam.
Multistate Performance Test Intensive
A growing number of states are using this standardized test, which assesses your ability to synthesize law, facts, and written instructions and apply them in the context of a simulated “work assignment”. Each MPT is 90 minutes long; your jurisdiction may include two, three or more MPTs as part of the bar exam. This exam will show you how to manage information and time effectively in the MPT context.
